Is It Time To Update Your Personal Operating Model?

We get “Update and Upgrade” warnings all the time concerning out software and IT systems.  Upgrade now for more features.  Update now for more security.  Upgrade now to gain more success.  And it goes on…  But what about our own internal operating system – how we conduct ourselves, manage, plan, execute and interact with all key players in our world?

As a leader, updates to your own operating system can be just as critical—if not more so. Your operating system—what we call your personal operating model—defines the way you get work done and ultimately determines your impact. This system comprises the choices you make about your priorities, the roles you choose to play, how you spend your time, and how you sustain your energy.

McKinsey Quarterly

The above quote is from an excellent article recently published in the McKinsey Quarterly, Warning: Upgrade your personal operating system. I highly recommend a read of this article and reflection and thought on its message. We are beginning a new year. New challenges. New relationships. New goals. Are you ready?  Is it time to focus on your own operating model?

Unlike notifications from our electronic devices, the warning signs to upgrade your personal operating model can be obscured by daily noise. There is no dictate to rethink your operating model at various inflection points. For leaders, you must generate your updates and upgrades from within.

The Four Drivers Of The Personal Operating Model.

The gist of the McKinsey article focuses on four drivers that comprise your operating system (see the full article for a list of the four drivers and their key questions to answer). My focus here is to add my perspective and thoughts on these four drivers and some of their questions to answer.
